Driving Innovation in European Photonics: Insights from Markus Wilkens at Photonics21

With just a few months to go until Tech Tour Photonics 2025 takes over Berlin on 9–10 October, we sat down with one of our key partners, Photonics21, to explore how they’re helping keep Europe at the forefront of photonics innovation. Representing a community of over 4,000 experts and backed by a €1 billion+ public-private investment agenda, Photonics21 plays a crucial role in bridging research, entrepreneurship, and investment. In this exclusive interview with Head of Operations Markus Wilkens, we dive into the organisation’s vision for the photonics ecosystem, their motivation for supporting Tech Tour, and their advice for startups, preparing to scale.
TT: Photonics21 is a key force in shaping Europe's photonics ecosystem. What motivated you to support our programmes such as Tech Tour Photonics 2025 in Berlin, and earlier in Brussels? How do these events fit with your goals as an organization?
MW: Photonics21 is a leading platform uniting expert stakeholders from across the photonics sector to drive innovation and foster collaboration throughout Europe. Through its Public-Private Partnership with the European Commission, Photonics21 has helped channel approximately €1 billion into photonics research and innovation projects. Supporting initiatives like Tech Tour Photonics 2025 and Tech Tour Next Gen IC 2025 aligns seamlessly with our mission to translate technological breakthroughs into economic growth — with startups playing a central role in that journey. These events create a vibrant ecosystem where startups and scale-ups can exchange ideas, showcase emerging technologies, get in contact with investors, and learn how to pitch effectively.
TT: Photonics is seen as a key technology for the future. How is Photonics21 helping Europe stay ahead in this space, especially with fast-growing areas like AI, quantum, and integrated circuits?
MW: Photonics21 plays a vital role in keeping Europe at the forefront of next-generation technologies. We develop a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, collecting input from companies and research organisations from across Europe, engaging more than 4,000 experts in the process. By promoting research, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and supporting development across the entire value chain, we ensure that photonics intersects meaningfully with transformative fields such as AI, quantum technologies, and integrated circuits. Through targeted funding recommendations, strategic roadmaps, and strong engagement with the European Commission, Photonics21 helps Europe not only to stay competitive — but to lead — in the global innovation race.
TT: You have a large network of members from both industry and research. How does Photonics21 help connect startups, scientists, and investors to work together and share ideas?
MW: At Photonics21, we believe that the most powerful innovation happens when brilliant minds come together. Our platform actively fosters dialogue between startups, researchers, and investors through workshops, networking events, and strategic matchmaking. By creating these bridges, we enable the transfer of cutting-edge knowledge, from lab to market, and support a vibrant community where ideas flourish and ventures find the right support to grow.
TT: With strong global competition, what benefits do European startups get from joining Photonics21 activities, as well as being part of the Tech Tour community?
MW: European startups that engage with Photonics21 and the Tech Tour community gain a significant edge through visibility, credibility, and access to a high-impact network. These platforms offer invaluable opportunities to pitch to investors, connect with corporate partners, and gain insights into market trends. More than that, they become part of a united European effort that amplifies their innovation potential and helps them scale in a competitive global environment.
TT: What advice would you give to photonics entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their business and connect with the right partners or investors in Europe and beyond?
MW: Photonics entrepreneurs should actively seek out collaborative opportunities, engage in innovation platforms like Photonics21, and participate in events like the Tech Tour. Building relationships, being open to feedback, and aligning your value proposition with societal and market needs will open doors. Europe has a rich ecosystem — tap into it, contribute to it, and you’ll find the partners and investors who believe in your vision.
Photonics21’s leadership in shaping Europe’s photonics landscape makes them a natural partner for the upcoming Tech Tour Photonics 2025 in Berlin. Their dedication to connecting ideas, people, and capital echoes the very purpose of our investment programme — accelerating innovation that matters. Join us in Berlin this October to meet the pioneers, investors, and partners driving the future of photonics. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, researcher, or investor, this is where photonics meets opportunity.
