The city of Wuxi, 120 km west to Shanghai (28 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao Statation with high speed railway), was the birthplace of Chinese indigenous industries in the late 1890s and now ranks No. 1 in terms of GDP per capita in China. The city has a total population of 6.5 million, and is quite robust in economic growth. Over 110 Fortune Forbes 500 companies have established subsidiaries in Wuxi. The city of Wuxi is also the home of about 190 public companies listed in China, Singapore and New York, and entrepreneurship and innovation in sustainability is well encouraged and quite vigorous in the area.
In recent years has become one of the most popular cities in China for VC/PE investment, with the majority of the leading Chinese investment firms active in Wuxi. Since 2022, many international investment firms such as IDG Capital, Coller Capital, Warburg Pincus, Redpoint have registered investment funds. AstraZeneca launched a 1 billion USD innovation fund in Wuxi in 2021.
