SIA "Getlini EKO" is a company established jointly by the municipalities of the city of Riga and the municipality of Ropazi, which manages the largest municipal solid waste landfill in the Baltic States - "Getlini". The landfill is one of the most modern in Europe, it is currently being built and developed as a modern and safe waste processing center. Within the framework of the international project CERITA, the largest waste landfill in the Baltic States "Getliņi" is studying potential solutions for the production of renewable energy in waste management facilities in Riga and Tartu. The aim of the CERITA project is to analyze the waste composition, energy consumption and renewable energy production potential of waste management facilities in Riga and Tartu. The project envisages developing a business model analysis, the economic value of products, as well as determining a solution investment plan. One of the main innovations of the CERITA project is the use of hydrogen and its derivatives to improve the final product obtained during waste recycling.

The first interregional green hydrogen value chain in South Estonia and Northern Latvia With a common goal and a strong partnership, work begins to establish the first interregional green hydrogen value chain in South Estonia, Tartu region, and Northern Latvia, Vidzeme region. Nine partners from Estonia, Latvia, and the Netherlands at the end of 2022 started work on the project “Supporting the Regional Development of the Green Hydrogen Fuel Value Chain for Transportation in Estonia and Latvia” (H2Value). As part of the Interregional Innovation Investments Instrument (I3) the H2Value project will be implemented for 3 years. The H2Value project aims to have two pilots in Tartu and Vidzeme regions – setting up a small-scale green hydrogen production plant based on solar energy, establishing a green hydrogen refueling station, testing the transportation of green hydrogen via road and use hydrogen as a zero-emissions source of fuel.

The BSR HyAirport project aims to facilitate the early adoption of this key technology (GH2) in the BSR by preparing airports for storing, handling, and delivering gaseous green hydrogen (GH2)as a future energy source in aviation. HyAirport is co-funded by the European Union Interreg Baltic Sea Region, Smart Green Mobility. With a partnership of airports, technology partners, airlines, and research institutions from across the programme area, the project will create a unique (maybe leading) platform for the joint development, implementation, and testing of practical solutions serving the common challenges and specific needs of hydrogen-powered aviation in the BSR region.
